Here is the evidence, but before that, the preamble. A
Professor who did Ph.D 15 years ago and rose to the rank of
Professor through 20 years of teaching is indeed mature,
experienced and the finest in teaching, the art of which he
has developed by repetition over 20 years. But does he know
Six Sigma, the latest Mantra of quality product, low cost,
least error, and most highly competitive? No. He doesn’t.
Because, it was not taught to him 25 years ago when he did
his MBA and he surely did not indeed, exceptional cases
apart--upgrade himself because it required extremely hard
work which a sinecure and safely ensconced person (much
worse attitude if he is paid by Government) never does.
Compare him with a younger lecturer who learnt the latest
subjects in his recently done MBA and knows the latest
development of industry (which changes by the day due to
technological changes springing up on daily basis) but,
indeed, may or may not have finesse in pedagogy but can
deliver goods all the same. This does not apply to all the
fresh MBA’s but only to MBA’s from those Institutes where
updation has been securely built in the culture of
continuous learning both by faculty as well as by students.
When you sit in judgment, find evidence of enforced
continuous learning system of faculty AND ALSO passing it on
to students. Here is the evidence on behalf of IISE.
The task of daily study (not reading) of newspapers and
extracting business news of relevance is performed by IISE
faculty daily. The marked portions of business news are then
sent to Library’s Press Cutting Section where it is cut and
pasted to produce. IISE’s own business newspaper ‘Kaizen’
and one copy of it is given to each student through IISE’s
own Press. Ask Manager Information to show you the sample.
Questions are prepared on the contents of Kaizen and
students are given one question each on Monday & Tuesday of
every week and given 5-minute time to prepare the
presentation and make presentation in 5-minutes before the
audience. Marking is done by examiners sitting in the
audience. These marks are added as Viva Voce marks of the
written examination paper ‘Current Business Affairs’. This
is IISE’s procedure of ENFORCING CONTINUOUS UPDATION of both
faculty (who award marks) and students (who have to pass the
examination). Ask Manager Information to show you the list
of questions and live video of Presentation Activity.
Latest Indian and foreign magazines and latest books on
Management are other sources of updation which have been
fully exploited for student’s and faculty benefit. All
articles of Magazines are studied by faculty and each is
pegged on 3 subject/topic fields of a computer database. Any
student/researcher who wants to scan published material for
a particular topic e.g., say strategy, or HLL or economy
etc., he just has to open the computer file (available on
all computers) and search on a single word and he will get
all article references in a row on the monitor screen
mentioning the date/name of the Magazine and Article and the
page number. He can then ask the Librarian to provide
particular issues of the magazine and complete his study in
the Library. Ask the Information Manager to give you a live
demonstration of this process right at this Information
Centre.
For the best 3 books published on Management/IT any where in
the world, IISE has subscribed with an American Company to
send material. Each of the 3 books is then studied and
summarized by a faculty member who makes a power point
summary of the book and teaches it in the class. Thus,
during 22 months of a PGDBA student at IISE, every PGDBA
student is exposed to 66 latest books. The student is thus
updated up to the latest best international book published
up to the last month of his stay at IISE, before embarking
on the journey into the industrial world.
